Argentina rugby union rescinds Matera suspension over social media posts | Rugby union

The Argentina Rugby Union (UAR) has rescinded its sanction against captain Pablo Matera and two players who posted racial and xenophobic comments on social media and were left out of the team for Saturday’s Tri-Nations match against Australia.

Flanker Matera was stripped of the captaincy and, along with lock Guido Petti and hooker Santiago Socino, suspended for comments posted between 2011 and 2013 which disparaged Black people and those from other South American nations. UAR said the players’ apologies, combined with their good behaviour in the years since the comments were posted, meant the suspension could be lifted.

“The preventive measures are unnecessary so we have resolved to lift the suspension of the three players and reinstate the captaincy to Pablo Matera,” the UAR said in a statement. “The disciplinary process continues and the commission will arrive at a final resolution in the next few days.”

Argentina strip Pablo Matera of captaincy after alleged xenophobic social media posts | Argentina rugby union team

Argentina have stripped Pablo Matera of the captaincy and stood him down from Saturday’s final Tri Nations clash with the Wallabies as they investigate allegedly “discriminatory and xenophobic” social media posts.

Just weeks after becoming a national hero as he inspired the Pumas to their first win over the All Blacks, Matera is under fire for tweets he allegedly made between 2011 and 2013 relating to Bolivian and Paraguayan domestic staff and black people.

The Argentina Rugby Union issued a statement on Tuesday condemning the comments and announcing the sacking of Matera. It also said veteran lock Guido Petti and hooker Santiago Socino had been stood down before the weekend’s game in Sydney, but did not elaborate on why.

“The Argentine Rugby Union strongly repudiates the discriminatory and xenophobic comments published by members of the Los Pumas team on social media and meeting as an emergency, the board of directors

In February 2019, Glencairn Properties, owned by the Edinburgh and London-based property developing family, the Teagues, applied to build a four-storey residential and office building at 7 Lower Gilmore Place, Fountainbridge.

The building would sit on the southern bank of the Union Canal where it ends at Lochrin Basin, and would replace several low-rise commercial and residential buildings.

That planning application was refused in October 2019, with Edinburgh City Council planners stating “the proposal is contrary to Edinburgh Local Development Plan policy, in that it would fail to respect the character and appearance of the area by virtue of the scale and massing of the building.”
