China aims to shake US grip on chip design tools

Veteran engineers and high-level executives are leaving top US chip design toolmakers for Chinese rivals as Beijing seeks to break America’s near monopoly on this key segment of the semiconductor industry.

Three Chinese start-ups established since September last year were founded by or have hired executives and engineers from Synopsys and Cadence Design Systems of the US, the world’s two biggest makers of electronic design automation (EDA) tools, as such software is known.

The start-ups include Nanjing-based X-Epic, Shanghai Hejian Industrial Software and Hefei-based Advanced Manufacturing EDA Co, or Amedac, in which Synopsys owns a stake.

The push to recruit US chip tool talent comes as Washington’s crackdown on Huawei Technologies exposes key weaknesses in China’s chipmaking ecosystem, including in EDA tools, which are used to design integrated circuits, printed circuit boards and other electronic systems.

The US has long dominated the segment, with Synopsys, Cadence, Mentor Graphics and Ansys

Australia’s failure to set a firm political course to net zero emissions is a profoundly backward act of economic and environmental self-harm. It’s in the national interest that we equip ourselves with not just the political will, but the practical tools required to harness the popular appetite for affordable renewable energy in the absence of a political solution.

This week a Deloitte Access Economics report found that a failure to achieve net zero emissions by 2070 would shrink the economy by six per cent and cost nearly 900,000 jobs. This would be akin to

(Reuters) – Dell Technologies Inc forecast current-quarter sales above market expectations as a pandemic-driven shift to remote work and learning powered demand for its desktops and notebooks, helping it post a surprise rise in third-quarter revenue.

The company said, on an earnings call with analysts on Tuesday, that it expects fourth-quarter revenue to rise 3% to 4% sequentially, implying a range between $24.18 billion and $24.42 billion, compared with analysts’ average expectation of $23.09 billion.

The PC maker’s shares were last up marginally in volatile after-market trading, as adjusted earnings matched Wall Street expectations of $2.03 per share.

Consumers and businesses are spending on notebooks at a rate Dell has not seen in over a decade, according to

The Chinese company, which has been under constant pressure from the Trump administration and US government officials over the past year, is boosting its Family Pairing controls. It will allow parents greater control on what their teens can search for, who can comment on their videos (everyone, friends or no one), and whether their kids’ page is private (where the teen choose who can see the content) or public for the world to see.

The company is also adding the ability for parents to control if their teens’ Liked Videos section is viewable by others. Family Pairing

EU Commission Seeks Feedback on New Data Transfer Tools After Court Ruling | Technology News

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – The European Commission on Friday sought feedback on two new data transfer tools after Europe’s top court in July set strict conditions for such mechanisms used by thousands of companies to transfer Europeans’ data around the world for various services.

The Luxembourg-based EU Court of Justice upheld the validity of the data transfer mechanism known as standard contractual clauses (SCCs) in a case involving Facebook and Austrian privacy activist Max Schrems, who has campaigned about the risk of U.S. intelligence agencies accessing data on Europeans.

But judges said privacy watchdogs must suspend or prohibit transfers outside the EU if other countries cannot assure that the data will be protected.

The EU executive has since then scrambled to find a solution as companies grapple with the implications and cost of the court judgment. SCCs are used for services ranging from cloud infrastructure, data hosting, payroll and finance to
