Amid a public outcry about technology groups’ good fortunes during the coronavirus pandemic this year, Macron’s advisers said on Monday that the president had asked tech companies to sign up to a new initiative called “Tech for Good Call” underlining principles for the post-COVID world.

The French government released a list of 75 executives of tech companies

Google Assistant can set times for controlling internet-connected devices

Google Assistant, found in devices like the Nest Audio smart speaker, are getting smarter.

Chris Monroe/CNET

Smart assistants like Google Assistant, Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri have been able to handle home automation tasks for years. In a new update, however, it now looks like at least Google’s virtual helper has recently been learning a new trick.

Spotted by Android Police and Reddit, Google appears to have added additional functionality to Assistant when controlling internet-connected lights. As opposed to only being able to have the lights go on or off immediately, you can now say “Hey Google, turn on the lights in 5 minutes” or “Hey Google, turn on the lights at 7 a.m.”

A Google Developer page suggests that the functionality can handle more than just lights, with the site listing

States, FTC Set To Sue Facebook Over Acquisitions Of Instagram, WhatsApp

Federal and state investigators are readying antitrust charges against Facebook that will challenge the social media giant’s acquisition of two major rivals — Instagram and WhatsApp — in the last decade, which the authorities will argue left users with few alternatives to Facebook’s ecosystem, the Washington Post reported.

Key Facts

It could be the toughest regulatory challenge that Facebook has ever faced.

State attorneys general and the Federal Trade Commission are reportedly examining whether the dual acquisitions let users with worse services and lesser privacy protections than if WhatsApp and Instagram had remained independent.

While the lawsuits haven’t been finalized, nearly 40 state attorneys general led by New York’s Letitia James are reportedly on track to file a suit in early December.

In February 2019, Glencairn Properties, owned by the Edinburgh and London-based property developing family, the Teagues, applied to build a four-storey residential and office building at 7 Lower Gilmore Place, Fountainbridge.

The building would sit on the southern bank of the Union Canal where it ends at Lochrin Basin, and would replace several low-rise commercial and residential buildings.

That planning application was refused in October 2019, with Edinburgh City Council planners stating “the proposal is contrary to Edinburgh Local Development Plan policy, in that it would fail to respect the character and appearance of the area by virtue of the scale and massing of the building.”

Service NSW expecting cyber attack to set it back AU$7m in legal and investigation costs

Service NSW, the New South Wales government’s one-stop shop for service delivery, in April 2020 experienced a cyber attack that compromised the information of 186,000 customers.

Following a four-month investigation that began in April, Service NSW said it identified that 738GB of data, which comprised of 3.8 million documents, was stolen from 47 staff email accounts.

Service NSW assured, however, there was no evidence that individual MyService NSW account data or Service NSW databases were compromised during the attack.

“This rigorous first step surfaced about 500,000 documents which referenced personal information,” Service NSW CEO Damon Rees said in September. “The data is made up of documents such as handwritten notes and forms, scans, and records of transaction applications.”

In delivering its 2020-21 Budget on Tuesday, the government revealed the legal and investigative cost it is expected to incur from the attack.

“In April 2020, Service NSW alerted police and authorities

Dean Browning is a white political activist. That’s why his ‘I am a black gay guy’ tweet set off an internet mystery.

Dean Browning, a white political activist from Pennsylvania, acknowledges he accidentally tweeted about being “a black gay guy,” but his explanation as to why has only further deepened an internet mystery into how the now-deleted tweet came to be.

Joe Biden’s tax plans trend on Twitter as users poke fun at people afraid of the plan

“I am a black gay guy and I can personally say that Obama did nothing for me,” the Tuesday tweet read, as shared by multiple journalists. Many observers initially suggested Browning had meant to send that message from another account, rather than his own.

But Browning — a former Lehigh County Commissioner and business executive who this year lost a GOP congressional primary by 4% of the vote — soon tweeted his explanation: “I was quoting a message that I received earlier this week from a follower.”
