Aeris Launches Secure Data Channel between Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Aeris IoT Fusion Network

Aeris Cloud Connect frees users from costly VPNs by providing direct data transfer

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 12, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Secure, reliable transfer of data from IoT devices to a cloud environment is an escalating problem as businesses continue to scale complex IoT solutions. To provide a simple, economical and effective solution, Aeris, an IoT technology leader, today introduced Aeris Cloud Connect, which provides a direct, private connection between the Aeris Fusion IoT Network and each customer’s AWS cloud instance.

Cloud Connect uses an underlying MPLS (multi-protocol label switching) connection to enable data from IoT devices to be transferred directly to the cloud, without the need for a VPN and without sending data over the public internet.

Our customers worldwide have been seeking a means of better securing their data transfer from connected devices to the cloud,” said Amit Khetawat, Aeris vice president of products. “We

Dell Technologies, FedEx, Switch partner for edge computing nodes, services

Clockwise: Switch, FedEx and Dell Technologies are partnering on edge computing services.

Dell Technologies, FedEx and data center company Switch said they will team up to create a network of multi-cloud edge computing sites.

The move is one of the first concrete efforts highlighting how edge computing sites will be housed in existing real estate assets. I noted the possibilities in January and it’s no surprise Dell Technologies is involved given CTO John Roese highlighted the connection between edge compute and real estate.

Edge computing, as well as 5G, will acquire a more distributed network with various points of presence. These points are likely to be housed in existing real estate. When Amazon Web Services and Verizon outlined plans to partner on 5G, cloud, and edge computing use cases, it became one more data point in how the technology is also about real estate.

Dell, FedEx and Switch said they

Amazon Web Services will build its own public registry for Docker container images

Amazon Web Services Inc. is planning to create its own public container image registry in response to Docker Inc.’s decision to impose pull rate limits on Docker Hub.

The public cloud infrastructure provider has also posted some advice on how customers can avoid their application deployments breaking because of the limits.

The Docker Hub is a public repository of container images that are used to host the components of cloud-based applications. The vast majority of developers don’t create containers for common applications they use, such as Apache Web Server or MySQL DBMS, but instead pull one from Docker hub or another repository and start running it immediately.

So in most cases, production software chains consist of downloading a popular container image, running it for a short time, and then dumping it. When they need to use an application again they just repeat the process.

That’s all well and good, except

Amazon Web Services launches Nvidia Ampere-powered instances

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the general availability of a new GPU-powered instance called Amazon P4d that is based on Nvidia’s new Ampere architecture, and the two firms are making big performance claims.

AWS has offered GPU-powered instances for a decade now, the most current generation called P3. AWS and Nvidia are both claiming that P4d instances offer three times faster performance, up to 60% lower cost, and 2.5 times more GPU memory for machine learning training and high-performance computing workloads when compared to P3 instances.

The instances reduce the time to train machine-learning models by up to three times with FP16 and up to six times with TF32 compared to the default FP32 precision, according to Nvidia, but can also enable training larger, more complex models.

These are some heavyweight instances, too. P4d instances with eight Nvidia A100 GPUs are capable of up to 2.5 petaflops of mixed-precision
