South Koreans, Chinese clash on social media over Chinese-style Kimchi winning international certificate

SEOUL, Nov 30 (Reuters) – China’s efforts to win an international certification for Pao Cai, a pickled vegetable dish from Sichuan, is turning into a social media showdown between Chinese and South Korean netizens over the origin of Kimchi, a staple Korean cuisine made of cabbage.

Beijing recently won a certification from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for Pao Cai, an achievement the state-run Global Times reported as “an international standard for the Kimchi industry led by China.”

South Korean media was fast to dispute such a claim and accuse the bigger neighbour of trying to make Kimchi a type of China-made Pao Cai.

The episode triggered anger on South Korean social media. “Its total nonsense, what a thief stealing our culture!” a South Korean netizen wrote on Naver.com, a widely popular web portal.

International coalition of activists launches protest against Amazon

An international group of climate activists and Amazon warehouse workers have launched an online campaign called “Make Amazon Pay,” calling on the tech giant to provide better working conditions for its employees and to reduce its expanding carbon footprint. The protests come just as the New York Times reports that the Seattle-based company has been on a hiring spree this year, expanding its global workforce.

“During the Covid-19 pandemic, Amazon became a trillion dollar corporation, with CEO Jeff Bezos becoming the first person in history to amass $200 billion in personal wealth,” the campaign states on its website. “Meanwhile, Amazon warehouse workers risked their lives as essential workers, and faced threats and intimidation if they spoke out for their rights to a fair wage.”

Eight international development banks sign road safety declaration – Economy – Business


The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), with seven other multilateral development banks (MDBs), have announced on Monday a joint commitment to improving road safety, as road accidents claim almost 1.25 million lives per year and are considered to be a rapidly growing public health hazard, according to a high-level joint statement.


The high-level joint statement was signed by the African Development Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Development Bank of Latin America, the EBRD, the European Investment Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, and the World Bank, which confirmed the MDBs’ commitment to implementing their 2020 Road Safety Declaration.
