Washington state ranks No. 2 nationwide for annual video game industry economic output at $11.6B

(Halo Infinite Photo)

Washington state’s video games industry overtook Texas last year and claimed the No. 2 spot for total economic output, as the U.S. video game industry grew to new heights yet again.

Those are two takeaways from a new report published by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), the games industry’s trade organization in the U.S.

In Washington state, the local games industry represents 48,808 jobs, with an economic output of $11.6 billion. This puts it ahead of all other states besides California, which has an effectively insurmountable lead. A little over half of all game development nationwide is done in California, which accounts for $51 billion of the more than $90 billion in economic output generated nationwide in 2019.

The ESA defines “economic output” as “the total value of the goods and services produced in the economy.”

Washington has been an important overall part of the U.S.

Computer game inspires development of disaster management app for California firefighters

California has beat its own record. In 2018, the Butte County “Camp Fire” took first place on the Top 10 list of the state’s deadliest and most destructive fires since 1932. Second place held firm with LA’s Griffith Park Fire of 1933. Yet, California wildfires ignited this year have taken first, third, fourth, and fifth places, with Northern California’s August Complex Fire at the top, having surpassed a million acres, says Will Pigeon, assistant fire captain for Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

“I’m hearing the truth of what former Vice President Al Gore said in ‘An Inconvenient Truth,’ his 2006 documentary about global warming,” Pigeon said. “He was right when he correlated global warming with the dramatic and steady increase in wildfires.”

And, it’s only gotten worse.

“Times have changed,” said Pigeon, “and these megafires, extraordinary fires that devastate a large area, are the new normal. While it’s devastating

Nintendo Adds Sharp as Assembler of Popular Switch Game Console

Nintendo has been diversifying its supply chain since before the Covid-19 era.

Nintendo Co. has added Sharp Corp. as an assembler of its Switch console, according to people directly involved in the matter, as it works to stabilize production and hedge against U.S.-China trade tensions.

The video game giant has struggled to produce enough units for most of this year as the hit game Animal Crossing: New Horizons and stuck-at-home consumers fueled demand. While the coronavirus outbreak hurt production early on, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said this month that output has returned to normal and the Switch is now made in Malaysia, in addition to existing China and Vietnam locations.
