Discovery Joins the Streaming-Service Fray With Discovery+

Media company Discovery (DISCA) – Get Report on Jan. 4 is launching a streaming service, Discovery+, including a distribution deal with Verizon  (VZ) – Get Report that will make the service immediately available to 50 million customers.

The Silver Spring, Md., company’s service will feature 55,000 episodes from channels in the company’s portfolio, including HGTV, Food Network and Animal Planet. 

“We have been working methodically the past two years to bring all of our strategic advantages to the launch of Discovery+, including distribution and advertising partnerships around the world, a world-class offering of quality brands, authentic personalities and the largest content library at launch, as well as a broad slate of exclusive programming,” Chief Executive David Zaslav said in a statement. 

The service will be free for up to 12 months for new and existing Verizon customers, depending on their plans.

Discovery Partners With Verizon to Distribute New Streaming Service | Technology News

(Reuters) – Discovery Inc. is launching a new streaming service, called discovery+, and has a U.S. distribution deal with Verizon Communications Inc that will make the service available to 50 million customers on day one, following Disney’s lead.

Discovery+ will be available on Jan. 4 in the United States where it will include 55,000 episodes from channels in the Discovery portfolio, which include HGTV, Food Network and Animal Planet.

The service will be free for up to 12 months for new and existing Verizon customers, depending on their plan. People who aren’t eligible for the free trial can subscribe to the service for $4.99 per month with ads, or $6.99 per month ad-free.

Verizon played a role in the success of Walt Disney Co’s Disney+ streaming service by making it available to millions of wireless customers. The service launched in November 2019 and had 73.7 million subscribers a year later.

Discovery, home of Shark Week, enters the streaming wars with Discovery Plus

Discovery, home to HGTV, Food Network, and Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week, is entering the streaming space with Discovery Plus.

Discovery Plus will start at $4.99 with an ad-supported tier, along with a $6.99 ad-free option. CNBC first reported the news. The streaming service will launch on January 4th, 2021. The company aims to bring the service to more than 25 countries around the world over the next year. Each subscriber’s account will allow up to five different profiles, and four concurrent streams. The company’s press release does not note if Discovery Plus will offer content in 4K, but notes it will be available on “major platforms, including connected TVs, web, mobile, and tablets” at launch.
