Brussels seeks to demand more from Big Tech in revamp of internet rules

The EU is considering two-tier legislation to impose greater responsibility on Big Tech over removal of illegal content and the fight against counterfeit products in the first overhaul of the bloc’s internet rules in two decades.

The bloc’s preferred option is to adopt “asymmetric measures” where more is demanded from Big Tech to enforce policing of online services and the smooth functioning of cross-border digital services, officials in Brussels said.

The move comes as groups such as Facebook and Google are accused of using their clout to undermine European rivals and confirms Big Tech’s worst fears that the rules will hit them harder.

“Asymmetric measures with stronger obligations for very large platforms, further clarifications of the liability regime for online intermediaries and EU governance with reinforced oversight and enforcement . . . [is] the preferred option,” a leaked document said.

Big Tech, mostly Silicon Valley-based groups, are likely to see

Virgin Galactic is a ‘pure hype stock,’ trader says, after big rally

Virgin Galactic has taken off in the past month.

Shares have rallied more than 60% since the beginning of November — adding another 6% on Tuesday after NASA awarded the company a contract for space flight and integration services.

Mark Tepper, president of Strategic Wealth Partners, isn’t buying the move, though.

“It’s a pure speculation, pure hype stock. It amazes me that this thing has a market cap of $7 billion and it’s going to do less than $1 million in sales this year. The valuation is absolutely crazy,” Tepper told CNBC’s “Trading Nation” on Tuesday.

Virgin is expected to generate $966,000 in sales in fiscal 2020, according to FactSet. That topline number is expected to rise to $28 million in fiscal 2021 when commercial flights are expected to begin. However, Tepper is not confident the customer base is as large as investors anticipate.

“These flights are priced like somewhere

Zoom reports big 3Q gains, but slowing growth sinks stock

SAN RAMON, Calif. (AP) — Zoom’s videoconferencing service remains a fixture in pandemic life, but its breakneck growth is showing signs of tapering off as investors debate whether the company will be able to build upon its recent success after a vaccine enables people to intermingle again.

For now, Zoom is thriving as tens of millions of people who never heard of the service at the beginning of the year rely on its video meeting tools to connect with their co-workers, teachers, friends and family while efforts to fight contain the pandemic prevent them from going into offices, schools and most many other places. That dependence boosted Zoom’s fortunes, producing a pandemic-driven success story that was highlighted again Monday with the release of the company’s quarterly results for the August-October period.

Zoom’s revenue more than quadrupled from the same time last year to $777 million, yielding a profit of $198

Amazon, Apple stay away from new French initiative to set principles for Big Tech

French President Emmanuel Macron has sought for the past three years to cajole tech giants into collaborating with governments on a series of global challenges such as fighting hate speech online, preserving privacy or contributing to state coffers.

Amid a public outcry about technology groups’ good fortunes during the coronavirus pandemic this year, Macron’s advisers said on Monday that the president had asked tech companies to sign up to a new initiative called “Tech for Good Call” underlining principles for the post-COVID world.

The French government released a list of 75 executives of tech companies

Uber made big promises in Kenya. Drivers say it’s ruined their lives.

NAIROBI, Kenya — At first, work as an Uber driver seemed to offer Harrison Munala everything he’d hoped for when he moved from a town in the western part of Kenya to its capital, Nairobi.

Uber seemed like the answer to Munala after he had spent nearly 15 years of informal employment as a house cleaner and school bus driver. Many of the energetic hustlers with middle-class aspirations who flock to East Africa’s economic hub thought so, too.

Work with Uber was so good that, about three years ago, after a year having driven a car he rented privately for 15,000 shillings a week (at the time, about $150), Munala, who is now 34, borrowed money from his sister for the down payment on a Toyota Passo, a compact car. And he took out a loan from Izwe, a pan-African microfinance and loan company.

Now, Munala figured, he could work

You can save big on Wi-Fi 6 AND mesh networking with these eero deals

Almost all of Amazon’s eero and eero 6 mesh Wi-Fi systems are discounted for Cyber Monday.

Mesh networking has come into style in the last couple of years, and it’s especially popular with those who have a large area to cover. These systems generally employ multiple nodes that all communicate with each other, sending out a unified signal for your devices. This is different from most classic network extenders, which move you between SSIDs as you come in and out of range. Most mesh systems cost more than a classic router, especially if you have a setup with multiple nodes, and Cyber Monday is a great time to make up that price difference with some great deals.

There are many mesh Wi-Fi systems on the market, some with Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) and some with Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ac), but some of the best deals have so far been on Amazon’s own

Salesforce-Slack would be first big deal in boom year for software

The tech industry has seen some hefty deals announced during the 2020 pandemic, including several in the tens of billions of dollars. But not in software.

That could change soon. Salesforce, which has been one of tech’s biggest acquirers in recent years, has been in talks to buy Slack, CNBC and other media outlets reported on Wednesday. Slack shares surged almost 38% after the initial report, lifting its market cap to $23 billion.

It would be one of the biggest software acquisitions ever, and potentially the largest since IBM bought Red Hat for $34 billion, a purchase announced in 2018.

The dearth of big software deals this year reflects the outsized growth much of the industry has experienced during the past eight months
