Amazon U.K. is conducting an investigation following several reports of customers being sent items such as cat food and kitchen equipment instead of the PlayStation 5 they ordered.
The PS5 came out on Thursday, since when there have been a host of reports from Amazon customers that their console was substituted for something far less enticing.
Multiple customers have claimed to have opened the Amazon box, only to find pet food instead of a games console waiting inside.
Other unwanted substitutions have included kitchen equipment and toy guns:
It’s not clear whether the incorrect items are being sent because of mistakes at the fulfilment centers or because of something more sinister. A couple of unconfirmed reports suggest customers saw delivery drivers tampering with packages shortly before they were delivered. Amazon employs several different courier firms in the U.K., as well as relying on its own delivery staff.
Amazon has been approached for comment, but in a statement sent to Eurogamer, the company acknowledged that some PS5 customers had received the wrong item. “We’re all about making our customers happy, and that hasn’t happened for a small proportion of these orders,” an Amazon spokesperson said.
“We’re really sorry about that and are investigating exactly what’s happened. We’re reaching out to every customer who’s had a problem and made us aware so we can put it right. Anyone who has had an issue with any order can contact our customer services team for help.”
With the PS5 selling out fast in the U.K., it’s unlikely the disappointed Amazon customers will receive a replacement console anytime soon. The PlayStation 5 listing on Amazon U.K. simply states that the item is out of stock and that “We don’t know when or if this item will be back in stock”.
The bodged deliveries add to a painful launch day for the PlayStation 5 in the U.K., with several key stores having to abandon launch day sales because of a lack of stock.
