Social media ‘misinformation’ endangers democracy, historians say

False or misleading information shared on social media platforms regarding this year’s presidential election, along with racial and social unrest nationally, has some historians and others worried about the damage done to the democratic process.

Howard Schneider, executive director of Stony Brook University’s Center for News Literacy, said a polarized United States helped fuel “misinformation” during the contentious race between President Donald Trump and now President-elect Joe Biden. Underlying the polarization, which continues to flourish on social media, in chat rooms, on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, is America’s fraught racial history, some scholars believe.

“We’re in a situation where people are trusting their political and partisan group identity more than they are the news media,” said Schneider, a former editor of Newsday. “This is a real problem for the country. How do we educate people … who are so fixed and set in their ways, who won’t believe fact-based information?

You can save big on Wi-Fi 6 AND mesh networking with these eero deals

Almost all of Amazon’s eero and eero 6 mesh Wi-Fi systems are discounted for Cyber Monday.

Mesh networking has come into style in the last couple of years, and it’s especially popular with those who have a large area to cover. These systems generally employ multiple nodes that all communicate with each other, sending out a unified signal for your devices. This is different from most classic network extenders, which move you between SSIDs as you come in and out of range. Most mesh systems cost more than a classic router, especially if you have a setup with multiple nodes, and Cyber Monday is a great time to make up that price difference with some great deals.

There are many mesh Wi-Fi systems on the market, some with Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) and some with Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ac), but some of the best deals have so far been on Amazon’s own

‘Drunk squirrel’ becomes unlikely internet hero after eating too many fermented pears

In the midst of an endless news cycle centred on global pandemic guidelines and the future of democracy itself, it seems no one can resist a much needed break. Enter: a drunk squirrel vid.

A video posted on Twitter earlier this week, which now has nearly two million views, shows a squirrel guzzling down some pears which have seemingly fermented – turning them alcoholic.

The drunk squirrel was initially caught swaying on camera by Katy Morlok of Minnesota, who had put out an old pear from her fridge outside for local wildlife to eat. She saw one of the squirrels, who she called ‘Lil Red’, take a pear up a tree.

“It kind of dawned on me: ‘Oh no, those pears were so old, I bet they fermented,’” Morlok told local station Fox 9.

The wide-eyed tipsy squirrel can be seen slowly swaying backwards like any drunk mate you

The mysterious monolith in the Utah desert has now disappeared

monolithaerobureau

It was there… but now it is gone.

Utah Department of Public Safety Aero Bureau

Last week the internet went crazy when a strange 2001: A Space Odyssey-esque metal monolith was found in the Utah desert

But now, according to officials from the Bureau of Land Management in Utah, the strange metal object is gone.

“We have received credible reports that the illegally installed structure, referred to as the “monolith” has been removed from Bureau of Land Management (BLM) public lands by an unknown party,” read the statement, posted on Facebook.

“The BLM did not remove the structure which is considered private property.”

The Utah Department of Public Safety had initially discovered the object, in a helicopter in a remote region of southern Utah while counting bighorn sheep.

“I’d say it’s probably between 10

Utah’s Mysterious Monolith Case May Have Been Solved Thanks To The Internet

Utah’s mysterious monolith case seems to have been solved thanks to the Internet. If you leave a mystery alone on the web for long enough, someone will crack it. (Just look at how fast Reddit communities around different properties routinely figure out season arcs and twists months in advance.) Well, it seems as though the monolith is actually a leftover set piece from Westworld filming. On Reddit, users isolated the site of the weird rectangle and figured out where it was using Google Earth. Then, using historical imaging data, they figured out that it appeared between August 2015 and October of 2016. So, the HBO show was filming nearby and that means there could have been a set that was simply neglected on the way out of Utah. So, the Bureau of Land Management in the state had to issue a statement. Things get weirder, because now the monolith is

Ask Dr. Universe: Why does the internet go down?

Dr. Universe: Why does the internet go down? – Mia, 11, Sheridan, Wyoming

Dear Mia,

The internet has helped many people connect with classmates, friends and family during the pandemic. But you’re right, sometimes the connection gets lost.

My friend Dingwen Tao, an assistant professor of computer science at Washington State University, said we can think about the internet like a highway of information.

You might remember from our question about how the internet works that information, like the data that makes up your favorite cat video or science website, travels through electronic signals we cannot see with our eyes.

Tao said these electrical signals also can move through a system of underground wires and cables. The cables and wires run from where you are using the internet to a local internet office to a regional internet office.

One reason the internet might go down is that there is a

More plans revealed for 3,500-home development in Lincolnshire

Further plans have been revealed for a new 3,500 home development near Lincoln.

Improvements to public transport, walking, cycling, climate change and biodiversity will be key components of the development if new rules and design guides are approved next week.

The South East Quadrant is a development planned for land between Canwick and Bracebridge Heath around the Lincoln Eastern Bypass.

It would include new schools, a new district centre, a local centre and seven hectares of commercial land.

It’s expected to take up to 2036 to complete and is part of a much larger plan for 6,000 homes in the Central Lincolnshire Local Plan — though there is no deadline for this higher number.

New plans have been revealed

North Kesteven District Council’s executive members will examine feedback to the Lincoln South East Quadrant Concept Plan and Design Codes on Thursday.

The document before councillors next
